Rose made it through the week by merely holding on by her fingertips. Holding on to the fact that this weekend, she’d be home alone. No construction. No home improvement. No Mari complaining about the way Rose had cut her apple.

When Ed came on Saturday morning to pick up Mari, he sent her out to his truck alone. A cluster of wings beat in Rose’s chest. “How did the interview go?”

A smile stole across his face so fast Rose barely saw it. “Good enough. I should know soon, Rose.”

She rubbed her hands up her arms as if cold, but she wore a long-sleeved shirt and didn’t have a chill. “Just let me know, Ed.”

“I wanted to talk to you about something else.”

“Okay.”

“I’m getting married in October.” He glanced over his shoulder and out the door. “I haven’t talked to Mari about it. I’d like your help with that.”

Rose’s mouth turned into sand. She tried to swallow away the unpleasant texture, but her tongue felt too heavy.

“Maybe when I bring her back tomorrow afternoon,” Ed said.

“Tomorrow afternoon’s fine,” Rose said. “You realize she won’t react well to it. She resists change.”

Ed sighed and wiped his hands down his face. “I know, Rose. She’s my daughter too.” He turned and pushed the screen door out, leaving it to crash closed behind him.

She’s my daughter too.

What did that mean?

Rose moved to the doorway and lifted her hand in a good-bye wave for Mari. She didn’t return it. Rose closed the front door and leaned against it, the silence of the house speaking to her, calming her.

Just like she had last week with Tom, she felt free. And with that freedom came a pocket of guilt she couldn’t rid herself of. She wondered if she would ever be able to live without feeling guilty about something she’d said to Mari, something she’d done to try to help Mari, something she’d felt about Mari.

But this was her weekend, and she wasn’t going to spend too much time worrying about Ed and Mari. Oh, no. Rose had plans.

Her first stop of the day was at the salon, where she’d booked a full spa experience. The sun shone merrily overhead, and her car didn’t give her much trouble on the way there. Her sister texted about the upcoming birthday party for Mari just as Rose arrived at the salon.

She smiled at the exuberance she could hear in Fiona’s words, though she was only reading the message. She fired off a quick response and set her phone to silent. She was going to get a pedicure, then a facial, and then a massage. She had plans to pick up pizza on the way home, and spend the evening with her favorite rom-com.

She relaxed into the massage chair while her feet soaked, closing her eyes to fully escape.

“Morning, Rose,” a woman said, and she jerked her eyes open to find Leslie Allan, the mother of a Down syndrome girl who went to the same academy as Mari.

“Hi, Leslie.” Rose smiled at her.
